India Industrial Output Grows 6.7% in September as Mining Slump Offsets Factory Gains

Manufacturing rose 7.6% and electricity and gas supply grew 11.2%, but a 6.2% contraction in mining pulled overall industrial growth below August's pace.

Industrial industry news

India's industrial output grew 6.7% in September compared with the same month a year earlier, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation said in quick estimates released on Wednesday. The figure marks a slowdown from August, when the ministry had estimated growth of 8%. The overall index stood at 124.3 for the month, against 116.5 in September 2025, so industrial activity kept expanding even as the pace eased.

The headline number was dragged down by mining and quarrying, whose output fell 6.2% year on year. That sector has now contracted in eight of the past nine months, according to an analysis of the official data, and it remained the weakest part of the industrial economy. Manufacturing and power generation, by contrast, stayed firmly positive and carried the index.

Factories and power plants carry the index

Manufacturing output rose 7.6% on the year, while electricity and gas supply expanded 11.2%. Water supply, sewerage and waste management grew 5.8%. Within manufacturing, 17 of the 23 industry groups tracked at the two-digit level posted positive growth over September 2025, a sign that the expansion reached well beyond a handful of sectors.

Electrical equipment led the gains, growing 33.9%, supported by production of switchgear, circuit breakers and control and meter panels. Rubber and plastics products rose 19.9%, helped by plastic sheets and tires for light motor vehicles. Motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers grew 19%, with auto components, passenger cars and commercial vehicles making the largest contributions.

Capital and intermediate goods showed the strongest momentum among use-based categories. Intermediate goods output increased 12.2%, the fastest of the major groups, followed by capital goods at 10.4%. Infrastructure and construction goods grew 7.2% and primary goods 4%. Consumer durables rose 6%, while consumer non-durables managed only 1.4%, pointing to uneven demand on the consumption side.

What the data means for industrial careers

Manufacturing has been the most reliable source of factory work in this cycle, and the September figures reinforce that pattern. Demand for electrical apparatus, vehicles and plastics products supports hiring across assembly, quality control and maintenance roles, and the strength in intermediate and capital goods suggests that investment-linked production is holding up rather than fading with consumer spending.

Weak mining is the other side of the labor picture. A sustained contraction in mining and quarrying limits recruitment in extraction and associated services, and it makes industrial production overall more dependent on factories and utilities. Economists flagged that rising input costs tied to geopolitical tensions could be passed to consumers, which would test demand for manufactured goods and, in turn, the hiring that goes with it.

What to watch next

The ministry's quick estimates are subject to revision in later releases, so the September figures may shift. Analysts said they expect industrial production to keep growing in the near term on the back of manufacturing and investment-related output, but they cited persistent mining weakness, elevated energy prices and trade disruption as downside risks for exporters.

The coming months will show whether the strength in electrical equipment, vehicles and capital goods can offset weakness in mining and consumer non-durables. Attention will focus on whether policy support and investment in grids, energy storage and related infrastructure translate into firm orders for domestic manufacturers, and on whether input cost pressures ease before they reach retail prices.
