How Search Ads Work

Unit
  • Search advertising model: Advertisers bid on keywords to have their ads appear alongside organic search results. When a user searches, an auction determines which ads show and in what order, based on bid amount and expected performance.
  • Ad auction mechanics: Each query triggers a real-time auction. The system evaluates all advertisers targeting that keyword, considering bid price, ad relevance, landing page quality, and expected click-through rate to rank ads.
  • Cost-per-click (CPC): Advertisers pay only when someone clicks their ad. The actual CPC is determined by the ad rank of the next competitor, not the advertiser's own bid.
  • Ad rank formula: Ad Rank = Bid x Quality Score (plus extensions impact). The highest ad rank wins the top position. Advertisers can also use first-page bid estimates to gauge competitiveness.
  • Impression vs. click: An impression occurs each time the ad is shown. Click is recorded when a user interacts. The ratio forms the click-through rate (CTR), a crucial quality metric.
  • Served ads vs. eligible queries: Ads may not show if Ad Rank falls below a threshold. Advertisers must maintain relevance and sufficient bids to avoid low impression share.
  • Match types: Keywords can be set to broad match, phrase match, exact match, or broad match modifier. Each controls how closely the search query must match the keyword for the ad to trigger.
  • Negative keywords: Terms advertisers explicitly exclude from triggering ads. This prevents wasted spend on irrelevant traffic and improves campaign efficiency.
  • Quality Score components: Google calculates Quality Score based on expected click-through rate, ad relevance, and landing page experience. A higher Quality Score can lower costs and improve ad position, making it essential to optimize ad copy and landing pages for targeted keywords.
  • Ad extensions and impact: Extensions like sitelinks, callouts, and structured snippets provide additional information and can increase click-through rates. They also positively affect Ad Rank, as the system accounts for expected impact of extensions when determining ad position.
  • Keyword research and grouping: Effective campaigns organize keywords into tightly themed ad groups with corresponding ad copy. This improves relevance, click-through rates, and Quality Scores. Tools like Google Keyword Planner help identify search volume and competition levels for candidate keywords.
