Defining Mixed Methods Research

Unit
  • Combination of methods: Mixed methods research involves collecting, analyzing, and integrating both quantitative and qualitative data within a single study or program of inquiry. The core idea is that the combination provides a more complete understanding of research problems than either approach alone.
  • Quantitative component: Quantitative methods involve numerical data, statistical analysis, and structured instruments such as surveys or experiments. They are effective for measuring variables, testing hypotheses, and generalizing findings to populations.
  • Qualitative component: Qualitative methods involve non-numerical data such as text, audio, or video, analyzed through thematic analysis, grounded theory, or narrative analysis. They provide depth, context, and understanding of participant perspectives.
  • Integration point: The defining feature of mixed methods is integration, the intentional bringing together of quantitative and qualitative data at some stage of the research process. Integration can occur during data collection, analysis, interpretation, or presentation.
  • Pragmatic orientation: Mixed methods researchers often adopt a pragmatic worldview, focusing on what works for the research question rather than being bound to a single philosophical tradition. Pragmatism allows flexibility in method selection.
  • Complementarity purpose: One common purpose is complementarity, using qualitative data to illustrate quantitative results or quantitative data to contextualize qualitative findings. This enhances validity and richness.
  • Development purpose: Mixed methods can support development where results from one method inform the use of another method. For example, qualitative interviews may inform the design of a quantitative survey instrument.
  • Triangulation purpose: Triangulation seeks convergence and corroboration across methods to increase confidence in findings. When both quantitative and qualitative data point to the same conclusion, the evidence is stronger.
  • Expansion purpose: Expansion involves using different methods for different components of a study to broaden the scope of inquiry. For instance, a survey may capture breadth while interviews capture depth.
  • Evolution of the field: Mixed methods research has evolved from early debates about paradigm incompatibility to a recognized methodology with established design typologies and quality criteria. Journals and funding agencies increasingly support mixed methods.
Campaign Case

Study: Health Beliefs and Screening Behavior (fictional mixed methods study)

Objective: Understand factors influencing colorectal cancer screening uptake among rural populations. Quantitative survey measured knowledge, attitudes, and screening rates. Qualitative semi-structured interviews explored barriers and facilitators in depth.

Design: Sequential explanatory design: quantitative phase first, followed by qualitative phase to explain unexpected survey findings.

Integration: Survey results identified low knowledge as a key barrier. Interviews revealed that fear and mistrust of the healthcare system were deeper issues not captured by the survey. The combination provided a more actionable understanding.

Outcome: The study informed a targeted intervention addressing both knowledge and trust. This illustrates how mixed methods can produce comprehensive insights for complex health behaviors.

Quick Revision
  • Mixed methods research integrates quantitative and qualitative data for a more complete understanding.
  • Quantitative methods measure and generalize; qualitative methods explore and contextualize.
  • Integration is the hallmark of mixed methods, occurring at any research stage.
  • Common purposes include complementarity, development, triangulation, and expansion.
  • Mixed methods has become a widely accepted methodology with established designs.
