What Are Expanded Text Ads?

Unit
  • Definition: Expanded text ads are a search ad format allowing up to three headlines (30 characters each) and two description lines (90 characters each), along with a display path and final URL. This extra space enables advertisers to convey more information and create stronger calls to action.
  • Character limits: Each headline is limited to 30 characters, descriptions to 90, and the display path to 15 characters per field. These constraints require concise, impactful writing that highlights key benefits immediately.
  • Ad components: The ad consists of headlines (multiple), descriptions, display URL (derived from final URL with custom path), and optional ad extensions. Headlines and descriptions can appear in varying orders depending on device and user context.
  • Truncation behavior: On smaller screens or in certain formats, only the first one or two headlines and the first description may show. Writing each component as a standalone message ensures effectiveness even when truncated.
  • Benefits over standard ads: Expanded ads offer more real estate for differentiation, allow testing of multiple messages within one ad, and generally achieve higher click-through rates due to richer presentation.
  • Ad rotation: Ads within an ad group rotate to serve the best-performing combination. Ad rotation settings can optimize for clicks, conversions, or rotate indefinitely for testing.
  • Relevance scoring: Google Ads assigns a Quality Score based on expected click-through rate, ad relevance, and landing page experience. A higher score lowers cost per click and improves ad position.
  • Compatibility: Expanded text ads are compatible with the Search Network, including Google Search partners. They can be served on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
  • Best practices for headlines: Place the most compelling message in headline 1 since it is almost always shown. Use headline 2 for a supporting benefit or unique selling point. Headline 3 can include a call to action, price, or promotional offer. Each headline should be able to stand alone if truncation occurs.
  • Description line strategy: Description 1 should reinforce the headline and include key benefits or features. Description 2 is ideal for adding urgency, a specific offer, or a strong call to action. Like headlines, each description must be self-contained because either may be omitted on smaller screens.
  • Display path customization: The display path (two optional text fields) appears before the domain in the ad. Use relevant keywords or brand terms to increase click-through rate. For example, /keyword/phrase can make the ad more relevant to the searcher's query and improve Quality Score.
