What is Anchor Text? Types and Examples

Unit
  • Definition: Anchor text is the clickable visible text in a hyperlink. It provides both users and search engines with context about the linked page's content. Effective anchor text improves navigation, accessibility, and SEO signals.
  • Exact-match anchor text: Uses the exact keyword phrase that the target page aims to rank for. Example: linking the phrase "SEO tools" to a page about SEO tools. Overuse can appear manipulative.
  • Partial-match anchor text: Includes the target keyword along with additional words. Example: "best SEO tools for beginners" linking to a guide on SEO tools. This variant adds natural context.
  • Branded anchor text: Uses the brand name as the link text. Example: "Moz" or "Ahrefs" links. These build brand recognition and are low risk for penalties.
  • Generic anchor text: Uses generic phrases like "click here" or "learn more". These provide little thematic signal but can improve user experience when context is clear from surrounding content.
  • Naked URL anchor text: Uses the full URL as the visible text. Example: "https://example.com/page". Common in citations and references, but less user-friendly.
  • Image alt text as anchor: When an image is linked, the alt attribute becomes the anchor text. For example, an image of a product with alt text "blue running shoes" links to the product page.
  • Natural variation: A healthy link profile includes a mix of these types. Search engines expect diversity; an overabundance of exact-match anchors may signal unnatural link building.
  • LSI anchor text: Latent Semantic Indexing anchor text uses related terms and synonyms instead of exact keywords. For example, linking with "content marketing software" to a page about "blogging tools". This approach helps search engines understand context without triggering over optimization flags.
  • Contextual relevance: The anchor text should align naturally with both the linking page and the linked page content. A link about "web design tips" placed in a paragraph about marketing strategies creates confusion. Search engines evaluate the surrounding text to judge relevance.
  • Internal vs external anchor text: Internal links often use descriptive anchor text to improve site navigation and distribute link equity. External links require careful optimization to avoid being seen as spammy. A balanced approach uses branded or partial match anchors for external links.
  • No follow anchor text: Links with the rel="nofollow" attribute do not pass SEO value but still provide user navigation and referral traffic. Using nofollow on some anchor text, especially paid or user generated links, helps maintain a natural link profile and reduces penalty risk.
Campaign Case Study

Campaign: Brightway Tools Product Launch

Objective: Improve rankings for "project management software" by acquiring backlinks with optimized anchor text.

Target Audience: Small business owners and team leads searching for productivity solutions.

Channels: Guest blogging on industry sites, resource page outreach, and broken link replacement.

Results: After three months, the brand achieved a 20 percent increase in organic traffic for the target keyword, with the anchor text distribution showing 30 percent branded, 40 percent partial match, 10 percent exact match, and 20 percent generic. These figures are illustrative; actual results vary.
