This assessment shows how a marketing team can find, rate and control the risks that come with running social media accounts, paid advertising and influencer partnerships. Eight risks were chosen because they are plausible in everyday social media work and affect people, money, legal duties and brand trust. Privacy breaches in targeting carry the highest inherent score, while account compromise and backlash follow closely, and fraudulent traffic and budget drift are more common but easier to limit. Each risk is scored before controls and again after existing and added controls. Most fall to Medium or Low once the added controls are in place, but the privacy risk remains Medium because the impact stays serious. The first actions are a consent check on audiences, a claims sheet with sign off, multi-factor sign in on every account and daily spend caps. The team is a teaching example, so every score illustrates method rather than a real brand.
Scope
This assessment covers the social media accounts, paid advertising, influencer partnerships, content creation and campaign reporting run by a marketing team, from planning and pre-launch checks to live monitoring and reporting. It looks at risks to personal data, legal compliance, intellectual property, budgets, brand reputation and account security. It does not cover legal advice on any specific advertising claim or any real brand. Jurisdiction, audience size, platform mix and budget are assumptions made for teaching.
Context
The team includes a social media manager, two content creators, a paid media specialist, a community moderator, an analytics lead and a marketing director. Brand accounts are run on several major platforms through a managed tool with named users. Custom audiences are built from customer lists, and a monthly paid budget is spent through platform ad accounts. Agency staff and freelance influencers work under written contracts. Each risk is scored before controls to show its natural level, then again after the existing controls and the controls that should be added.
Objectives, assets and stakeholders
The objective is to grow reach, engagement and qualified leads while staying lawful, honest and secure, and keeping spend within plan. The assets in scope are brand accounts and their login details, the content library and licence records, customer and audience data, paid media budgets and campaign reporting, and the trust of followers. Stakeholders include the marketing team, the marketing director, finance, sales, customers and followers, creators and agency partners, platform support teams and the regulators who oversee advertising and privacy. Each risk has one owner role, and the marketing director reviews the register with finance each quarter.
