Industrial Design Fundamentals Flashcards

Creative40 Questions and AnswersFreeUpdated Sep 2026

Industrial design is the discipline of creating manufactured products that are useful, usable, and appealing to the people who buy and use them. This flashcard set introduces the core ideas behind that work, from the historical role of designers in shaping everyday objects to the practical concerns of ergonomics, materials, and production. The material is organized into five groups that move from foundational concepts toward applied decision making, so each later group builds on the vocabulary and reasoning of the earlier ones.

To study effectively, read each answer aloud and then explain it in your own words without looking. Try to connect every principle to a real object you own, such as a kitchen tool, a chair, or a phone, and ask what problem the designer solved and what trade-offs they accepted. Work through one group at a time, and revisit earlier groups when a later card feels unfamiliar. Sketching a quick comparison of two products can also reinforce the difference between form and function. Self-testing with the questions in random order builds recall far better than rereading.
