Depreciation Accounting Flashcards

Finance40 Questions and AnswersFreeUpdated Sep 2026

Depreciation accounting explains how the cost of a long-lived tangible asset, such as a building, vehicle, or machine, is spread across the periods that benefit from its use. Instead of recording the full purchase price as an expense when the asset is bought, a business records a portion each period, which matches expenses with the revenue the asset helps produce. This set moves from the core ideas of cost, salvage value, useful life, and carrying amount, through the main calculation methods, into journal entries, partial periods, estimate changes and disposals, and finally the effects on financial statements and analysis.

To study effectively, work through each group in order, because later cards assume the vocabulary of earlier ones. Before reading an answer, try to say it aloud in your own words, then check the wording against the card. Pay special attention to the arithmetic in the method cards, and practice it with a simple asset costing a round amount so the steps are easy to follow. Finally, remember that the numbers in examples are illustrations, while the underlying logic of allocation is what carries over to real statements.
