Basic Life Support Flashcards

Healthcare40 Questions and AnswersFreeUpdated Sep 2026

Basic Life Support, often shortened to BLS, is a set of skills used when a person is unresponsive, not breathing normally, or in cardiac arrest. It covers scene safety, checking responsiveness, calling for help, performing chest compressions, giving rescue breaths, using an automated external defibrillator, and clearing a blocked airway. These skills are taught to health care workers, first responders, and members of the public, and they follow a consistent sequence so that a rescuer can act quickly without guessing.

To study this topic well, begin with the basic ideas: why safety comes first, how to recognize a person who needs help, and how the chain of survival links early recognition, early compressions, early defibrillation, and advanced care. Then move to applied skills such as compression depth and rate, airway positioning, and the steps for using a defibrillator. Practice each sequence aloud and say what you would do at each stage. Because these skills depend on hands-on practice, flashcards work best alongside a supervised course with manikins and feedback from a qualified instructor. Review the cards repeatedly, and try to answer each question before you read the answer.
