What Is Site Reliability Engineering?

Unit

Site Reliability Engineering, commonly abbreviated as SRE, is a discipline that applies software engineering principles to infrastructure and operations problems. The goal is to create scalable, reliable software systems by treating operations work with the same rigor, tooling, and automation used in software development.

The core premise of SRE is simple: if operations is treated as a software problem, then software engineers can solve it. This means writing code to automate repetitive tasks, building systems that self-heal, and using data to make decisions about reliability trade-offs rather than relying on instinct or tribal knowledge.

SRE teams own the production environment. They define what reliability means for a service, set measurable targets, respond to incidents, and work with development teams to build features that do not compromise system stability. This dual responsibility, keeping systems running while improving them, is what makes SRE distinct from both traditional operations and pure software development.

A central tension in SRE is the balance between velocity and reliability. Development teams want to ship features fast; users want systems that do not break. SRE resolves this tension through error budgets, a concept covered in detail later in this course. When a system has reliability headroom, teams can deploy freely. When reliability erodes, the focus shifts to stabilization.

SRE is not a job title alone. It is a set of practices, principles, and cultural commitments that any engineering organization can adopt. Some organizations staff dedicated SRE teams. Others embed SRE practices into existing platform or infrastructure teams. The label matters less than the discipline: measuring reliability, reducing toil, and engineering for failure.

Example

A mid-size SaaS company running a customer-facing analytics platform found its operations team spending most of their time manually restarting services, responding to pager alerts, and handling deployment failures. After adopting SRE principles, the team defined explicit reliability targets, automated their most common remediation steps through runbooks and scripts, and established a post-incident review process. Within two quarters, the mean time to recover from incidents dropped significantly, and engineers reclaimed time previously lost to repetitive manual work.

Quick Revision
  • SRE applies software engineering principles to operations and infrastructure problems.
  • SRE teams own production reliability while working collaboratively with development teams.
  • The core tension in SRE is balancing deployment velocity with system reliability.
  • Error budgets are the primary mechanism SRE uses to manage that tension.
  • SRE is a discipline and cultural practice, not only a job title.
