Introduction to Parametric Thinking

Unit
  • Parametric design: a process where geometry is defined by variables (parameters) and rules (relations) rather than fixed coordinates. Changing a parameter automatically updates the entire model.
  • Historical roots: emerged from architectural practice in the 1960s with Luigi Moretti parametric architecture, later adopted in industrial design and engineering through CAD systems.
  • Core components: parameters are numerical inputs (lengths, angles, counts), relations are mathematical or logical connections that constrain and drive geometry.
  • System thinking: designers define the logic first, then explore variations by adjusting inputs. This shifts focus from drawing single objects to creating generative systems.
  • Value proposition: reduces repetitive tasks, enables rapid iteration, and supports optimization. A single parametric model can produce hundreds of distinct configurations.
  • Industry adoption: used in architecture (façade systems, structural optimization), product design (ergonomic handles, customized cases), and digital fabrication (CNC, 3D printing).
  • Common tools: Grasshopper (visual programming for Rhino), Dynamo (for Revit), SolidWorks equations, and open-source libraries like OpenSCAD offer varying levels of abstraction.
  • Mindset shift: instead of drawing a chair, you define parameters like seat height, back angle, and material thickness, and let the rules generate the form. The designer becomes a meta-creator of logic.
  • Data flow: In parametric models, data flows from parameter inputs through relation nodes to geometry outputs. Visual programming tools display this as a node graph, where each node processes information (e.g., mathematical operation, curve transformation) and passes results downstream, making the logic transparent and editable.
  • Associative geometry: Parameters and relations create associations between geometric elements. If a curve control point moves, dependent surfaces, extrusions, and intersections update automatically. This associative behavior ensures consistency and reduces manual rework when exploring design alternatives.
  • Parametric families: Many CAD systems organize parametric models into families or templates. A family contains parameters that define variations (e.g., different sizes of a window). Users select a family type and adjust parameters, allowing standardized but customizable components across a project.
  • Performance and optimization: Parametric models can integrate with analysis engines to optimize designs. By linking parameters to simulation outputs (stress, daylight, cost), designers can use solvers to find parameter values that meet performance criteria, enabling data-driven design decisions.
Design Principle

Principle: Parameterization; Isolating Variables

Definition: Identify the key numerical drivers that control form and function. Each parameter should represent a meaningful design dimension (e.g., width, angle, count) and be exposed for easy adjustment.

Application: In a parametric chair model, define seat height, seat width, backrest angle, and armrest length as independent parameters. Use formulas to link dependent dimensions: seat depth = 0.8 * seat width. This keeps the design responsive while maintaining proportions.

Quick Revision
  • Parametric design uses parameters and relations to generate geometry dynamically.
  • System thinking is essential: define logic before exploring variations.
  • Key components: parameters (inputs), relations (rules), and output geometry.
  • Common tools include visual programming (Grasshopper) and equation-based CAD.
  • The designer acts as a meta-creator of generative systems, not a drawer of forms.
