What Cloud Computing Actually Means

What Cloud Computing Actually Means

Cloud computing is the delivery of computing resources — including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, and analytics — over the internet on a pay-as-you-go basis. Rather than owning physical hardware and maintaining data centers, organizations rent access to these resources from a cloud provider and pay only for what they use.

There are three primary cloud deployment models. A public cloud is operated by a third-party provider and shared across multiple customers, each isolated from one another. A private cloud is dedicated infrastructure used exclusively by one organization, either on-premises or hosted by a provider. A hybrid cloud combines both, allowing data and applications to move between private and public environments based on need.

Cloud computing is also categorized by the level of abstraction provided. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) gives you raw compute, storage, and networking — you manage the operating system and above. Platform as a Service (PaaS) provides a managed environment where you deploy code without worrying about the underlying infrastructure. Software as a Service (SaaS) delivers fully managed applications accessible through a browser or API.

The five essential characteristics of cloud computing, as defined by industry consensus, are: on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity, and measured service. These characteristics together create the flexibility, scalability, and cost-efficiency that make cloud adoption attractive.

Understanding these foundational concepts is critical before diving into any specific cloud platform. GCP, like all major cloud providers, organizes its services according to these same models and abstractions — knowing the terminology helps you navigate documentation, architect solutions, and communicate clearly with other professionals in the field.

Example

A mid-size SaaS firm running its entire product on physical servers in a leased data center faces unpredictable traffic spikes every quarter. When usage surges, the servers become overloaded, causing slowdowns for customers. By migrating to a public cloud using IaaS, the company can provision additional virtual machines on demand during peak periods and shut them down afterward — paying only for the extra capacity used. This eliminates both the performance problem and the cost of maintaining idle hardware year-round.

Quick Revision
  • Cloud computing delivers computing resources over the internet on a pay-per-use model.
  • The three deployment models are public, private, and hybrid cloud.
  • IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS represent increasing levels of abstraction and managed service.
  • The five essential cloud characteristics include on-demand access, elasticity, and measured service.
  • Understanding these fundamentals prepares you to navigate GCP services effectively.
