Defining Technology Systems

Unit
  • Technology system: A combination of hardware, software, data, networks, and people that work together to achieve a specific goal. Examples include enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, customer relationship management (CRM) platforms, and cloud-based collaboration tools.
  • Key characteristics: Interdependence among components means a change in one part often affects others. Systems are designed with inputs, processes, outputs, and feedback loops to maintain stability and adapt to changing requirements.
  • Layered architecture: Most systems follow a layered pattern: infrastructure layer (hardware and networking), platform layer (operating systems and middleware), application layer (software solutions), and user interface layer (front-end and experience).
  • Stakeholder perspective: End users, IT operations, business managers, and security teams all interact with the system differently. Understanding these viewpoints helps in designing solutions that balance usability, performance, cost, and risk.
  • System lifecycle: From planning, analysis, design, and implementation to maintenance and eventual retirement. Each phase requires specific skills and documentation to ensure continuity and knowledge transfer.
  • Standards and compliance: Technology systems must adhere to industry standards such as ISO 27001 for security, ITIL for service management, and regulatory requirements like GDPR or HIPAA when handling sensitive data.
  • Scalability and flexibility: Systems should be designed to grow with demand, whether through vertical scaling (adding resources to a single node) or horizontal scaling (adding more nodes). Flexibility allows for integration with new technologies.
  • Reliability and availability: Measured by uptime percentages, mean time between failures (MTBF), and mean time to repair (MTTR). Redundant components and failover mechanisms are common to achieve high availability.
  • Performance metrics: Systems are monitored using key performance indicators such as response time, throughput, and resource utilization. These metrics help identify bottlenecks, plan capacity, and ensure that service level agreements (SLAs) are met through proactive tuning and optimization.
  • Security and access control: Protecting data and system integrity requires authentication, authorization, encryption, and audit logging. Role based access control (RBAC) and multi factor authentication (MFA) are common practices to minimize unauthorized access and data breaches.
  • Interoperability and integration: Modern systems often need to exchange data with external applications through APIs, message queues, or direct database connections. Standards like REST, GraphQL, and SOAP enable seamless integration while maintaining data consistency and transactional reliability.
  • Disaster recovery and business continuity: Organizations must plan for unexpected failures through regular backups, off site replication, and documented recovery procedures. Recovery point objectives (RPO) and recovery time objectives (RTO) define acceptable data loss and downtime, guiding the design of resilient systems.
Code Example
YAML
system-blueprint:
name: 'Customer Portal'
layers:
- infrastructure:
servers:
- role: web
count: 3
- role: database
count: 2
- platform:
os: 'Linux Ubuntu 22.04'
middleware: 'Nginx, Node.js'
- application:
frontend: 'React'
backend: 'Python Django'
- data:
database: 'PostgreSQL'
cache: 'Redis'

This YAML snippet defines a layered system blueprint for a customer portal. It separates infrastructure, platform, application, and data layers, making it easier to manage and scale each component independently.

Quick Revision
  • Technology systems integrate hardware, software, data, networks, and people.
  • Layered architecture provides modularity and separation of concerns.
  • System lifecycle includes planning, implementation, maintenance, and retirement.
  • Standards and compliance ensure security and regulatory adherence.
  • Scalability, reliability, and flexibility are key design goals.
