Classification of Rolling Element Bearings

Unit
  • Radial bearings: Designed primarily to support loads perpendicular to the shaft axis. Deep groove ball bearings are the most common type, offering low friction and high-speed capability. They accommodate radial and moderate axial loads in both directions.
  • Thrust bearings: Intended for axial loads parallel to the shaft. Cylindrical roller thrust bearings handle high axial loads at moderate speeds, while ball thrust bearings are suitable for lower loads and higher speeds.
  • Angular contact bearings: Support combined radial and axial loads through a contact angle between the raceway and the ball. Single-row versions handle axial load in one direction; paired arrangements manage bidirectional forces.
  • Self-aligning bearings: Accommodate shaft misalignment and shaft deflections. Double-row spherical roller bearings and self-aligning ball bearings are typical examples, widely used in applications with housing deformation.
  • Needle roller bearings: Use long, thin rollers to provide high load capacity in a compact radial cross-section. They are ideal for oscillating movements and limited space, such as in automotive transmissions.
  • Tapered roller bearings: Feature conical rollers and raceways that converge at a common apex. They handle heavy combined loads and are prevalent in wheel hubs, gearboxes, and industrial machinery.
  • Cylindrical roller bearings: Offer high radial load capacity with low friction. Separable designs simplify mounting and dismounting. Single-row, double-row, and four-row configurations serve different load requirements.
  • Specialty bearings: Include ceramic hybrid bearings (silicon nitride balls with steel races), instrument bearings for precision devices, and thin-section bearings for aerospace and robotics applications.
  • Mounted bearings (Pillow blocks): Consist of a bearing insert pre-assembled into a housing unit for simplified shaft support. Pillow block and flanged designs are common in conveyor systems and agricultural machinery. They accommodate moderate loads while offering self-alignment and easy replacement without specialized tools.
  • Linear bearings: Guide components along straight paths with low friction and high positional accuracy. Ball bushings and profile rail guides are typical types used in CNC machines, 3D printers, and automation. They handle radial loads perpendicular to the shaft and provide repeatable, smooth linear motion.
  • Lubrication principles: Proper lubrication is critical for reducing friction and dissipating heat. Grease lubrication is common for simplicity and low maintenance. Oil lubrication via bath, circulation, or mist suits high speeds. Solid lubricants like PTFE or graphite work in vacuum chambers.
  • Seals and shields: Protect bearings from contaminants and retain lubricant. Non-contact metal shields (ZZ) suit high-speed applications. Contact rubber seals (2RS) provide superior contamination protection at lower speeds. Labyrinth seals reduce torque while blocking large particles in dirty environments.
Process Flow
  1. Stage 1 - Application analysis: Identify load type (radial, axial, combined), speed range, operating temperature, and lubrication method.
  2. Stage 2 - Bearing type selection: Choose among ball, roller, needle, or tapered designs based on load magnitude and direction. For high-speed applications, select ball bearings with cage guidance.
  3. Stage 3 - Size and rating calculation: Determine required bore diameter, outer diameter, and width using dynamic load rating (C) and static load rating (C0) from manufacturer catalogs.
  4. Stage 4 - Tolerance class selection: Specify ABEC/ISO tolerance class (e.g., P0, P6, P5) according to rotation accuracy requirements. Higher classes reduce runout and vibration.
  5. Stage 5 - Internal clearance verification: Select C2, CN, C3, or C4 clearance based on temperature gradients and interference fits. Incorrect clearance leads to preload or excessive play.
  6. Stage 6 - Final specification: Document bearing type, size, tolerance, clearance, cage material, seals, and lubrication in the engineering drawing.
Quick Revision
  • Radial bearings support perpendicular loads; thrust bearings handle axial loads.
  • Angular contact bearings combine radial and axial load capacity via a contact angle.
  • Needle and tapered roller bearings offer high load density for compact spaces.
  • Selection process involves load analysis, type choice, rating calculation, tolerance, and clearance specification.
