Objective of the Game

Unit
  • Game objective: Baccarat is a comparing card game where players bet on which of two hands, player or banker, will have a point total closest to 9. Each hand can receive a third card according to fixed drawing rules.
  • Card values: Cards 2 through 9 are worth their face value. Tens, jacks, queens, and kings count as zero. Aces count as one. Only the last digit of the total matters, so a hand totaling 15 is valued as 5.
  • Hand types: Three possible betting outcomes exist: player hand wins, banker hand wins, or tie. The house edge differs for each, with the banker bet offering the lowest advantage for the casino at approximately 1.06 percent.
  • Natural hands: If either hand totals 8 or 9 from the initial two cards, that is called a natural. No further cards are drawn and that hand wins immediately unless both are natural, in which case the higher natural wins.
  • Drawing rules: The third card rule is predetermined. For the player hand, if the total is 0-5, a third card is drawn. If 6 or 7, the player stands. The banker hand then draws or stands based on its own total and the player's third card value.
  • Dealing sequence: Four cards are dealt in order: player first card, banker first card, player second card, banker second card. Cards are dealt face up except sometimes the first card for suspense, though modern games use all face-up.
  • Tie bets: A tie bet pays 8 to 1 or 9 to 1 but carries a high house edge of around 14.4 percent. Smart players avoid this bet despite its attractive payout, as it rarely occurs statistically.
  • Cut and shoe: Baccarat is dealt from a shoe holding six or eight decks. A cut card is placed near the end to indicate the last round. After that, the shoe is reshuffled to prevent card counting.
  • Commission: When the banker hand wins, a 5 percent commission is charged on the winnings. The dealer tracks this commission for each player and collects it at the end of the shoe or when the player leaves the table. Commissions are recorded on a special board or in a commission box to ensure accuracy and transparency.
  • Table layout: The baccarat table has three distinct betting areas for player, banker, and tie. Each seat is numbered, and players can place bets on either hand. The layout also includes commission boxes, a discard rack, and a spot for the shoe. Dealers must confirm all bets are placed before the deal begins.
  • Mini baccarat: A smaller, faster version of the game played with lower table limits. Mini baccarat follows the same rules but uses a standard blackjack sized table with one dealer instead of three. The quicker pace and simpler atmosphere make it popular among recreational and casual players.
  • Scorekeeping: Many baccarat tables provide scorecards and pencils so players can track past results. Some recreational players look for patterns like streaks of banker or player wins, even though each hand is statistically independent. Dealers facilitate this by distributing scorecards quietly and without influencing betting decisions.
Service Scenario

Situation: A new table guest asks the dealer to explain why the banker hand drew a third card even though the banker had a 6.

Guest Type: Recreational player unfamiliar with baccarat rules.

Recommended Approach: The dealer politely explains the drawing rules without interrupting game pace. The dealer mentions that when the player shows a 6 or 7, the banker with 6 stands, but when the player draws a third card of 6 or 7, the banker draws if holding 3-6. The dealer offers a printed rule card for reference.

Outcome: The player gains confidence and continues playing, appreciating the patient explanation.

Quick Revision
  • Baccarat goal is to predict which hand totals closest to 9; card values are face for 2-9, zero for 10 and faces, 1 for ace.
  • Natural 8 or 9 ends the round immediately; otherwise drawing rules apply automatically.
  • Tie bets are enticing but have a high house edge; banker bet has the lowest casino advantage.
  • Dealers must know drawing rules by heart to handle guest questions confidently.
